Written Sept. 5
Music, as much as any artistic endeavor, is an art in real time. Music would be irrelevant without that sense of forward motion, that sense of existing for a moment and then remaining only in our memories. Like a motion picture, a great deal of planning and work go into just about every fleeting second of a band’s eight minutes on the field.
We’re therefore pleased to present a few of the drill charts used in Washington’s marching band show this fall, developed by Christopher Cantrell from Hurst, Texas, who served on the visual staff for the Cadets of Bergen County corps in 1991-92, when they won the DCI World Championship.
The students of Washington Community High School, directors Jim Tallman & Lisa Parrott, & drum majors Dani Boley, Kathryn Pillischafske, Randy Sperry, and Beau Biedscheid, bring a marching band, 191 marchers strong, to the timeless music of the Beatles, including “The End,” “Eleanor Rigby,” and “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” The band performs at home football games and no less than seven festivals this fall. So if you go to a festival, you’ll probably see them there—for a moment!
