Whenever Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg walked down the streets of Norway with his wife, doing a little shopping, children would follow behind him, whistling the tunes he composed.

His famous tune from the Peer Gynt orchestral suite, “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” provides musical images of a chase scene.

Which makes you wonder: Is it a chase scene involving him and Norwegian children? At right, a street in Tromsø, Norway, north of the Arctic Circle. Yes, that’s a Burger King (probably built after Grieg’s death).

SALEM COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL

When Night Falls Jared Morgan, Drill
John Randolph, Percussion
Sarah Beth Farrell & Kacie Daugherty, Colorguard
Christie Zimmerman & Olivia Brauer, Winds
N. Snow & T. Beard, Drum Majors
Directors: John Haney and Mat Webster Featuring the music of Edvard Grieg and Modest Mussorgsky

Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, perhaps best known for his suite Pictures at an Exhibition, also wrote “Night on Bald Mountain,” featured in Salem’s show but never performed in the composer’s lifetime. It’s a tone poem about a witches’ sabbath. Perhaps there’s one happening right now in the mountain above, from the European Alps.

Home About ... Coverage I think we’re going to the moon because it’s in the nature of the human being to
face challenges. It’s in the nature of his deep inner soul. We’re required to
do these things just as salmon swim upstream.—Neil Armstrong, 1930-2012
